In July 2026, deep-sea search teams confirmed they finally located the wreckage of the Clipper Endeavor, a Douglas DC-4 operated by Pan American World Airways. The plane rests 2,000 feet beneath the Atlantic surface, roughly 10 miles off San Juan, Puerto Rico. It had been sitting down there in pitch darkness since Good Friday in 1952.

Both engines on the right side of the four-engine propeller plane failed in rapid succession. The pilots tried to turn back toward the island, but the aircraft lost altitude too fast. Ten minutes into the flight, the crew forced a ditching in rough ocean waters.

The landing itself wasn't the deadly part. In fact, all 69 people on board survived the initial impact with the sea.

The Fatal Three Minutes on the Ocean Surface

Back in 1952, airlines didn't brief passengers on emergency procedures. Flight crews didn't demonstrate flotation gear. Nobody pointed out exit doors before takeoff.

Only 17 people survived, including all five crew members and 12 passengers. The remaining 52 passengers drowned inside or around the sinking fuselage.

The Civil Aeronautics Board, which regulated air travel before the FAA existed, instituted mandatory pre-flight safety demonstrations as a direct response to the tragedy. How Deep Sea Searchers Found the Wreckage

Finding a plane sitting 2,000 feet down in the Atlantic takes years of archival research and the right underwater equipment.

The hunt picked up momentum in 2019 when Russ Matthews, president of the Air/Sea Heritage Foundation, spotted an old report about a luggage tag from the flight that had washed ashore in Florida decades ago. He started digging through Pan Am archives, Coast Guard records, and Civil Aeronautics Board transcripts.

The breakthrough came from court hearing records in Puerto Rico and a map sketched by U.S. Air Force pilots who happened to witness the crash during a nearby training flight.

Matthews combined those historic flight coordinates with historical ocean current records to narrow the search area to a 10-square-nautical-mile box.

In April 2026, Matthews partnered with Tony Romeo, chief executive of ocean exploration firm Deep Sea Vision, and Josh Gates from the Discovery Channel series Expedition Unknown. Deep Sea Vision brought in an autonomous underwater drone originally designed for deep-water mine detection.

The autonomous drone scanned the seafloor using high-resolution side-scan sonar. On its very first pass through the designated search grid, the drone captured clear images of the DC-4 fuselage and tail section split into two main pieces.

When the search team downloaded the images from the drone, the winged Pan American logo and the name "Clipper Endeavor" were still clearly visible on the aluminum skin after seven decades under sea water.

What Happens Next for the Wreckage Site

The Air/Sea Heritage Foundation isn't planning to raise the aircraft pieces from the seabed. Instead, the foundation is working alongside local officials in Puerto Rico to establish official heritage protections for the site as an underwater grave and historical landmark.

Search organizers have also reached out to surviving family members and the two remaining living survivors of the crash to share the imagery and offer closure.
